Runchatlive Gait Analysis Presentations at Therapy Expo 2024
Matt Phillips, creator of Runchatlive.com, will be delivering a Gait Analysis presentation and a practical workshop at this year’s Therapy Expo 2024:
- November 27th (Day 1) 10.25am in Theatre C – ‘Clinical Application Of Gait Analysis For The Injured Runner’
- November 28th (Day 2) 12.50pm in the Hands On Hub – ‘Gait Analysis Practical Demonstration: How To Shift Load’
Matt’s presentations last year at Therapy Expo 2023 were extrememly popular, including a co-presentation with Siddharth Hans, founder of of GaitOn Motion Analysis Systems.
If you are a soft tissue therapist who has not yet attended Therapy Expo, it is a marvellous two day event of multidisciplinary training & CPD education with particular focus on areas such as musculoskeletal medicine, sports injuries and neurorehabilitation, as well as the latest innovations in practice & business management skills.
You will also find Matt, as always, hosting the two days of presentations in the STA Update Theatre at Therapy Expo (Matt Phillips is host of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast).
INTERESTED IN LEARNING GAIT ANALYSIS?
‘Gait Analysis For Runners: A Modern Approach’ is a CPD course ceated & delivered by Matt Phillips, in association with The ST School.
Course dates & locations for 2025 are in the process of being organised, and will be released soon. Due to popular demand, Manchester so far seems highly likely, but if you have a preference & would like details, please use the contact form to let us know!
Who is the course for?
• Therapists, coaches & trainers with no experience in Gait Analysis but are thinking of offering a new service to their running clients.
• Current providers of Gait Analysis who wish to update the service they offer.
Is it Online or Face-To-Face?
The course runs over three weeks, with two ONLINE theory sessions (Saturday mornings 8.30am to 12.30pm), and one FACE-TO-FACE practical day (9.30am to 5pm) at a choice of location. Homework is given after each theory session to promote maximum learning in preparation for the face-to-face practical day. Full details of course content can be found further down the page under ‘Course Content’.
Minimal Requirements Of Qualification
Anyone with a Level 3 qualification or above is welcome to join the course, but attendees must be aware of their own personal scope of practice, as directed by their personal level of qualification. For example, to assess any injury, a minimum of Level 4 is required, so attendees without Level 4 would in theory be allowed to provide gait analysis as a means of offering symptom modification & support for a runner who has already been assessed for injury by a Level 4 therapist, and not be allowed to offer any form of clinical reasoning to identify the source of injury. Insurance providers will need to be made aware if this.
Course Content
- Biomechanics of running – gait cycle, injury & performance
- Causes of running related injury – perceived vs. evidence based
- Understanding pain –Cartesian, Gate Control, Neuromatrix, Biopsychosocial
- Subjective assessment for gait analysis
- Objective assessment for gait analysis
- Gait hardware & software
- Interpretation of data from gait cycle
- Gait modification & re-education
- Strength training for runners
- Footwear – trainers & orthoses
What Is A Modern Approach To Gait Analysis ?
Gait Analysis can be a hugely beneficial tool for runners, but often not for the reasons we are traditionally taught. Despite the popular use of Gait Analysis to screen runners for ‘biomechanical flaws’ to reduce running related injury and/or increase running performance, the success of such is often hit & miss. The fact that so many runners still get injured (or re-injured) is testimony to this.
In this course, running injury & performance specialist Matt Phillips of runchatlive.com guides participants through all of the traditional elements of Gait Analysis, but also draws upon research to highlight the limitations of a solely ‘biomechanical’ approach. Participants are then introduced to other ways that we can use a gait analysis service to help runners recovery from injury, reduce risk of future injury, and optimise performance.
